Welcome to Pistol New Zealand's Muzzle Loading page.

Muzzle Loading pistol shooting in New Zealand is controlled by the Muzzle Loading section of Pistol New Zealand and the various
matches are shot to the rules of three different organisations. MLAIC for the 13 shot matches, Pistol Australia for the 25M Aggregate
and 50M precision matches and Pistol NZ for the Black Powder Cartridge matches.

The aims of the MLAIC, as defined at the founding meeting of 20 June 1971 are:
| a) | To develop a wider interest in antique firearms, through shooting them as close as reasonably possible
under the original conditions and style. |
| b) | To discourage any alteration which would affect the historical value of antique firearms; to promote
their correct cleaning and repair; and to save them from destruction or irreparable damage. |
| c) | To encourage historical research into antique firearms and their use. |
| d) | To organise matches; establish shooting rules; publish results; award trophies and championship titles;
arbitrate on rule disputes, etc. |

NB: From these aims it is evident that MLAIC shooters should have an active interest in the historical past of the firearms they shoot.
Those interested only in shooting and unwilling to learn have no part in MLAIC Championships.

The matches shot provide a variety, from precision to speed with the aggregate duelling section allowing only 3 seconds for each shot.

The firearms used range from the 15th century matchlock to the late 19th century percussion pistol and revolver and their modern
made replicas with some matches to cater for guns with modern sights or purpose built target pistols.

World Championship Bronze

Greymouth pistol shooter Brian Gould won the bronze medal in Kuchenreuter (single shot percussion pistol) at the recent World
Muzzle Loading Champs held in Bordeaux, France. Gould's score of 98 was only 1 point behind the first and second place shooters
who equalled the world record.

The New Zealand team of Gould, Neal Kelly and Debora Pederson-Gould finished 6th in the Kuchenreuter event, 10th in
Mariette (percussion revolver) and 9th in the Cominazzo (flintlock pistol) event.

IN THE BLACK
August, 2007

Once again Greater Wellington Muzzle Loading Pistol Club hosted a very successful North Island Champs. They even managed to dodge most of the wet and
wild weather that had been predicted for Queens Birthday weekend. This event was combined with the NZBPSF National Champs so it was a huge amount of
shooting for those shooting every event but thanks to the good management of the organizers everything ran to schedule.

Trans Tasman/Pacific Zone Champs
Unfortunately this year, due to a combination of factors, our major event, the Trans Tasman Muzzle Loading Champs had to be cancelled. As this event was
also used as our entry to the Pacific Zone champs it was decided to instead use the scores shot at the NZBPSF Nationals which were held in conjunction with
the PNZ North Island champs in Wellington.

The normal selection process was applied for the team and the scores were sent to the US to be included with the other Pacific Zone team
scores. Brian Gould won gold in the revolver event, Ian Knight won golds in the Flintlock and Percussion pistol events and the NZ Team of Gould, Knight
and Don Spence won a Silver in Percussion Pistol and the Team of Gould, Knight and Syd Street won Bronze in the Revolver Teams event. The full pistol
scores can be found on the muzzle loading page of the PNZ website.

Postal Match
I know it's a bit hard to get out to the range when it's minus 6 degrees but the scores keep coming in for our postal match. This is just part of
developing the discipline to get to the range and shoot a match each month. If you haven’t sent a score in yet, how about making this the month to do
it? See the schedule and results also on the ML web page.

Junior Development
This is not necessarily a muzzle loading topic, but is your club doing its bit to encourage junior shooters? The Secondary Schools Air Pistol Competition
is a great way to get juniors involved in the shooting sports. My club has taken this up and each week we have muzzle loaders, practical shooters,
plinkers and ISSF shooters helping and coaching a group of kids who may never have had the opportunity to take up shooting. The kids are loving it and
I'm sure the helpers are too. The improvement after only 3 nights is amazing, I wish I could coach adult shooters and see the same results.

PNZ Nationals
These are to be held in Ashburton on the 6th and 7th October. Entry form in this issue of Bullshooter. See you there.

Keep your powder dry.
